The people are furious that they have no home and want to protest till the death. Some slit their wrists, commit suicide, jump off a building, these cases are very common. But once these things happen, the police seal off the bodies and negotiate with the family to compensate them, essentially 'gagging' them so that they won't tell the world." 9. Various of protesters outside ministry 10. Pan from security guard on walkie-talkie to protesters leaving UPSOUND (Mandarin) One of the protesters: "Let's go, hurry, let's leave." STORYLINE Protesters staged a rare public demonstration in China's capital on Thursday over what they said were illegal property seizures and compensation packages that fell far short of what was needed to buy new homes. Wearing white headbands emblazoned with the slogan "It's illegal to forcefully demolish one's house", the protesters from the city of Tianjin staged their rally outside the Ministry of Construction. The demonstrators said government land seizures had left them with no hope of buying new homes in their booming port city, 120 kilometres (75 miles) east of Beijing. They claimed that in one case, the government sold the valuable land in the centre of the city to developers who later entered it in a Hong Kong auction to attract investors. Spokesmen for the ministry did not immediately respond to faxed questions on the protesters' claims. While protests over property seizures and other nonpolitical issues have popped up occasionally in Beijing, the one on Thursday was unusually large and well-organised. Police and security guards attempted to prevent journalists filming the demonstration and tried to rip the headbands from the protesters' heads. One of the protesters later told AP Television that the protesters had reached the end of their tether. "We regular citizens can't go on anymore. What can we do? We have no house, our homes have been demolished and we can't even petition," Wang Xueyi said. The 57-year-old claimed she had received 104-thousand yuan (14,250 US dollars) in compensation for her ancestral home in Liangyouli, in the central Hexi district of Tianjin, in 2004. She showed documents which said officials sold the land to a local developer. Calls to the company named were not answered on Thursday. Wang said her husband died from stress shortly after the loss of their two-bedroom house and that she now lived with relatives. She went on to say she was detained for more than 40 days last summer when she came to Beijing to petition the government. "The people are furious that they have no home and want to protest till the death. Some slit their wrists, commit suicide, jump off a building, these cases are very common," Wang added. She suggested that these suicides were often covered up by officials. "The police seal off the bodies and negotiate with the family to compensate them, essentially 'gagging' them so that they won't tell the world," she claimed. The demonstrators planned to resume their protest on Friday. Authorities will build a third civil airport in Beijing in part to alleviate passenger flow in the region and reduce travel costs, according to a civil aviation official in Beijing. Feng, the head of China’s Civil Aviation Administration, said that there are plans to integrate the Daxing International Airport into the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei airport cluster, assigning specific roles to each airport. "The Beijing Capital International Airport will be mainly running for Star Alliance’s member airlines, and the Daxing International Airport, which is currently under construction, is intended to be a base camp for member airlines of SkyTeam. We are planning to make the Tianjin-Binhai International Airport an international hub in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region as well as an international freight logistics center. As for the Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport in Hebei [province], it will be fine-tuned to be a regional hub to provide affordable flights for more people, or low-fare airlines," said Feng. The aviation official also said that Beijing's two existing airports have reached the limits of their handling capacities. For instance, there are almost no spare slots in the existing airline timetables for international airlines to land in Beijing. The different locations of the airports in the Beijing and Tianjin municipalities as well as Hebei Province is expected to alleviate the heavy airport traffic in the capital. The establishment of relevant transportation systems will also be sped up to make the commute more convenient in these three neighboring regions. "Railways and inter-city transportation will be available in all airports in Beijing. It makes no difference whether one arrives at Tianjin Airport or in Beijing, as it only takes thirty-something minutes to travel from Tianjin to Beijing with high-speed railway. That’s a significant reduction in the time difference between flying to Beijing and flying to its neighboring cities," said Feng. BEIJING — The Chinese government is embarking on an ambitious project to merge several megacities with the capital Beijing and create a super metropolis capable of housing as many as 130 million people, the New York Times reported. The megalopolis, called Jing-Jin-Ji, would link Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, will be spread over 82,000 square miles, about six times the size of New York City, but with a population of as much as one third of the United States. The plan aims to revamp northern China's economy, by moving parts of Beijing's bureaucracy, factories and hospitals to the hinterland, while offering new services that are lacking in areas around Beijing such as bus terminals, schools, cinemas and parks. A subway and better light rail system are also under construction and will open in the next three to five years. A new bridge over the Chaobai River will connect to Beijing. With this new super city, the Chinese government aims to assign new economic rules to the cities: Beijing will focus on culture and technology, Tianjin will become a research base for manufacturing and Hebei will more likely focus on minor industries, such as textiles. The entire project, which has the support of President Xi Jinping, is likely to see a deep reconsideration of how taxes are collected and distributed within the territory, which would mean instituting property taxes and allowing local governments to keep them. "This is a huge project and is more complicated than roads and rail," Wang Hu, a historian of Beijing's development was quoted by the New York Times as saying. "But if it can succeed, it will change the face of northern China." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Construction of an Airbus facility began in north China's Tianjin on Wednesday. The aviation giant's A330 aircraft will be finished off here and delivered to clients. It is the company's first "completion and delivery center" for wide-body aircraft outside Europe. After being assembled in Toulouse, France, some A330 planes will be delivered to Tianjin for cabin installation, painting and flight tests. Tianjin already has an assembly line for Airbus A320 models. More than 260 aircraft have been delivered here since 2008. More than 1,240 Airbus planes are currently in service in Chinese airlines and A330 is the most popular wide-body jet. The company estimates the country will need 5,400 passenger aircraft with over 100 seats within the next 18 years. About 24 percent of Airbus' aircraft are sold to China every year. On Monday, Air China ordered 12 A330-300 aircraft from the company.

'The project of our lives' The executives also revealed that the construction of SM City Tianjin, a nearly 3 billion RMB ($483 million) development, is expected to be completed this year. "We call it the project of our lives, for SM China," Brosas said, describing the 540,000-square meter property that is 28 minutes away from Beijing by train and 90 minutes by car. SM Tianjin will become a destination mall with numerous attractions, such as a Science Discovery Center, an ice skating rink, aquarium, game center, and a 5-star cinema and gym to fulfill its vision as an "entertainment and relaxation paradise," an SM statement said. "We need to be very aggressive in China because of the competition," Brosas said. SM China CEO Gary Yeo said that SM chooses second- and third-tier cities in China since it entered the country "a bit late." Properties in first-tier cities, like Beijing and Shanghai, have become very expensive.Brosas explained that SM wants to develop properties in areas with no development yet as it wants "to be part of the development of the city." "SM Xiamen is one of the big examples of that trend. And all our malls are not in the city but in the outskirts and we develop together with the city," he said. Brosas said SM China has newly-acquired properties in Jiangsu province. "We'll begin construction in Yangzhou this year, by May, and we're planning to open it first quarter of 2017." Yeo said part of the future strategy of SM in China is real estate development, starting with the construction of condominiums near its mall in Chengdu. SM currently operates 5 malls in China, while 4 more are under construction, including SM City Zibo in Shandong, which is set to open this year. SM Prime earlier said that it would continue to spend P20 billion ($448.58 million) annually in China as part of its capital expenditure (capex) until 2018. Ten miles east of New York City's "original" Chinatown in Downtown Manhattan lies one of the fastest-growing Asian-American neighborhoods in the country: Flushing, Queens. Mandarin-speaking Chinese immigrants dominate the scene here on the outskirts of this outer borough, so it's become a must-hit food mecca for less-touristy tastes of Chinese-American staples. Take dumplings. Flushing has some of the city's very finest examples, and together they form a crucial part of the culinary and social fabric of "Chinese Manhattan." But you can't talk about Flushing and dumplings without talking to the Queen of Dumplings herself: Helen You. So we caught up with her at Dumpling Galaxy (her second Flushing dumpling house, opened after the runaway success of her still-fantastic Tianjin Dumpling House in Golden Mall) to get her take on what these tasty, doughy little orbs of joy mean to the neighborhood.
